My family has a long history of high blood pressure which can be traced up to the family tree back to my Great Grandmother on my mother’s side of the family. Didn’t meet any of my grandmother’s parents both died before I was born. Great grandmother was old, had a walking stick, and well advanced in age. I remember her for her silver-grey hair, her food, and coin gifts I got from her pouch she usually secured around her waist. All I can remember is that she was rushed to the hospital with chest pain and never came back home. I was home with my mother when a messenger brought the bad news and it was the first time I saw my mother cry and I couldn’t help but join in though at my young age I had no idea what had just happened.

Years went by and the deaths continued at 2-3year intervals. First was my grandfather the oldest son of his mother whose dad passed 3years easier.

Grandpa was strict and scary and he yelled at me on visits but dinner to wow for me, all of us grandchildren who visited during vacations got sit with him around the table, he only pulled out the bones in the fish served and we get to scramble for a real fleshy fish, we fought over the privilege to eat with grandpa then one day grandpa fell ill, went on addition with high blood pressure for about a couple of weeks within which I had the chance for vising him in the hospital twice. The first visit was nice we talked and he promises to home and we eat together. The second visit, however, was a nightmare, his head was propped up with 2 pillows had tubes in his nose hooked to what I now was as oxygen cylinder (we didn't have gas cylinders back then at home). I help to tightly to my mother crying she had to take me out of the ward. A few days later grandpa also died.

Two years after burying grandpa, his only sister collapsed behind her big pot of rich she was dishing into the s big pan for selling. She was taken off to the hospital and didn’t last more than a day Maafio as our uncles and unities use to call her went to her rest. Again hypertension-related complications. Twin brothers of my grandfather followed 2year later, one after the other within 3month with similar conditions.

Years went by then my grandmother that is my mother's mother, got her diagnosis of hypertension and will be on anti-hypertensive for the rest of her life. Elevated blood pressure with my grandmother shook me to the core. One of my older cousins and I found ourselves stuck with our grandmother alone at her house then suddenly that evening she starting vomiting lumps of blood. First time seeing something like that I was shaking as a run out to get a taxi to take us to the hospital. We pulled up at the entrance of the Outpatient's Department and it was quite a scene, accident victims on the floor of the department all varying degrees of injury, blood everywhere and there was no priority treatment. We got her in a wheelchair and had her tilt her head backward but the clotted lumps of blood kept forcing their way up her throat into a buddle cover cloth help over her mouth. She suffers a mild stroke that left her home ridden till death. She lost full motion in her left leg although she could talk normally with a straight face. She could only pull her left leg along within the house but couldn't go out much. When she died 2 years later I was far away from home and got the news by phone couldn't come to the funeral as I would have wished.

Aunty Bee was grand mom's oldest daughter followed a year after celebrating one year of grand mom's death. Aunty Bee's death was so sudden and shocking. Came back from a women's fellowship meeting from church complained of chest pain ask to be sent to the hospital. She died before getting to the hospital. We meet her in the morning in the morgue.

The latest was last year June when I got the call from my sister about my cousin Wilson the son of Aunty Bee, who had taken over his mother’s drinking bar business been admitted to the emergency room of the General Hospital the night before with blood pressure above 200/102mmH reading. He became so engrossed in the spot business he had no social life. Even at family events, he showed to be seen and left to open the bar or take over. We were told he had, had some symptoms days before the event that will take him to his grave. It was Sunday evening his friends over to go with him to see the new house that he and his little brother had completed. This was a house that started building had started couldn't complete due to her sudden heart attack. Wilson worked on its completions but passed before he could see the inside of the house.

So Wilson was preparing with his friends to go to the house but felt the urge to use the restroom just at the entrance he was spotted by one of the guys losing his balance trying to hold on the door.

He shouted and they all rushed to his side sent him the closest clinic but was immediately referred to the Emergency Room after taking him pressure and give some containment medication.

When they arrived he could talk and to respond to everyone but his condition quickly worsen by the night. He lost his speech, going in and out of consciousness. Doctors requested a head scan in the morning which came back with devastating results. Wilson suffered a cerebral hemorrhage (bleeding in the brain). It was put on oxygen all through his stay and they had to add a feeding tube for him to be able to feed him liquid food. I was with him every day for the two weeks to the day he died.

Towards the end of 2019, I started these morning headaches with dizziness that persisted for days. I decided to see the doctor and to check my BP numbers. I recorded blood pressure of 134/90 and diagnosed as pre-hypertensive and that was such a rude awaking give what I witness just a few months with Wilson's before Wilson's passing. In my search for a proven complementary control to staying alive, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and wellness, and reducing my risk of high blood pressure complications of a stroke, heart attack, or kidney and liver damage in the future that has befallen most of my close family members.

This hypertension pack introduced to me by a very close associate with whom I shared my fears has being a blessing able to bring me back down from pre-hypertensive levels and continue to rely on the pack to maintain a healthy level for the years ahead.

Hypertension is another name for high blood pressure. Hypertension can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, brain and kidney complications. It is a major cause of premature death worldwide, with upwards of 1 in 4 men and 1 in 5 women – over a billion people – having the condition. The burden of hypertension is felt disproportionately in low- and middle-income countries, where two thirds of cases are found, largely due to increased risk factors in those populations in recent decades.

Blood pressure is the force exerted by circulating blood against the walls of the body’s arteries, the major blood vessels in the body. When blood pressure is too high it is called hypertension. Hypertension is a primary risk factor for cardiovascular disease, including stroke, heart attack, heart failure, and aneurysm. Keeping blood pressure under control is vital for preserving health and reducing the risk of these dangerous conditions.

Blood pressure is reported in mm Hg, blood pressure is recorded with 2 numbers. The systolic pressure (higher number) is the force at which your heart pumps blood around your body. The diastolic pressure (lower number) is the resistance to the blood flow in the blood vessels. The systolic is the numerator and diastolic is the denominator. Below is an overview of estimated normal blood pressure for age.

Age  Range

Young child (1–5 years)
Older child (6–13 years)

70–90 mm Hg

The average blood pressure for an adult is 120/80 mm Hg. However, this is only an average and your doctor needs to consider acceptable ranges for you based on your presentation.

As a general guide high blood pressure is considered to be 140/90mmHg or higher (or 150/90mmHg or higher if you're over the age of 80). The ideal blood pressure is usually considered to be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg.
Blood pressure readings between 120/80mmHg and 140/90mmHg could mean you're at risk of developing high blood pressure if you do not take steps to keep your blood pressure under control. Everyone's blood pressure will be slightly different. What's considered low or high for you may be normal for someone else.

The exact causes of high blood pressure are not known, but several things may play a role, including:
Being overweight or obese
Lack of physical activity
Too much salt in the diet
Too much alcohol consumption
Older age
Family history of high blood pressure
Chronic kidney disease
Adrenal and thyroid disorders
Sleep apnea

If your blood pressure is too high, it puts extra strain on your blood vessels, heart and other organs, such as the brain, kidneys and eyes. Persistent high blood pressure can increase your risk of a number of serious and potentially life-threatening health conditions, such as: heart disease
Heart attacks
Heart failure
Peripheral arterial disease
Aortic aneurysms
Kidney disease
Vascular dementia
If you have high blood pressure, reducing it even a small amount can help lower your risk of these health conditions.

Hypertension is called a “silent killer” because most people with hypertension are unaware of the problem because it may have no warning signs or symptoms. When symptoms occur they include:
Morning headaches
Nose bleeds
Irregular heart rhythms
Vision changes
Buzzing in the ears
And in severe cases symptoms may include:
Chest pain
Muscle tremors
